2 of 2 Multicolour Lino Techniques: Creating a Flower Print from One Block

This tutorial demonstrates how to create a vibrant, multicoloured flower print from a single lino block using Specialist Crafts Easy Cut Lino. It highlights carving techniques, colour layering, and creative problem-solving that can be applied directly in the classroom. Students can explore precision, pattern design, and colour theory while gaining confidence in relief printmaking.

Step by step - Let's Create

Carve the Block

- Transfer your flower design onto the lino block.

- Work slowly and deliberately, especially for wobbly lines.

- For smoother control, cut slightly shallower first, then go over the lines again.

- For sharp right angles, cut from one side, stop, then rotate the block and cut from the other side.

Cut into Sections

- Once carved, carefully cut the block into separate pieces to create a jigsaw.

Prepare the Ink

- Roll out the colours until tacky.

- Mix white with green for a lighter shade for the leaves.

Ink the Sections

- Apply green ink to the leaf sections.

- Tape over the centres of the flower heads to protect them from the pink ink.

- Trim tape carefully to match the shape.

Add Additional Colours

- Roll out and apply pink ink to the flower petals.

- Remove the tape and dab yellow ink onto the flower centres.

Reassemble and Print

- Put the block pieces back together like a jigsaw.

- Press the block onto paper to print your multicoloured design.

Finish

- The final print should show clean layers and vibrant colours.

Tips:

- Take your time with tricky cuts and corners to maintain precision.

- Masking areas with tape helps keep colours clean and prevents overlaps.

By experimenting with cutting, masking, and layering, students gain practical experience in printmaking while developing an eye for composition, precision, and colour interaction. These skills support both art and design lessons, offering a creative way to integrate practical techniques into classroom projects.
