How to Fix Common POSCA Pen Problems

How to Fix Common POSCA Pen Problems

POSCA paint markers have earned cult status with students, artists, crafters and anyone who loves bold colour that behaves beautifully. They glide, they pop, they’ll happily draw on everything from paper and wood to fabric, metal and found objects in the art room. But even the best-loved tools can have the odd wobble.

The good news? Most hiccups are nothing dramatic, just the sort of quirks you can sort in seconds once you know what’s really happening inside the pen. So here’s a simple, confidence-boosting guide to help you troubleshoot, protect your stash and keep every POSCA in your classroom or studio performing like a dream.

When your materials behave, your ideas have room to run wild.

Dry POSCA Nibs

The Problem:
Your POSCA pen won’t release paint when you start drawing, leaving your nib dry and uncooperative.

Why It Happens:
POSCA markers use water-based acrylic paint, which settles over time. If a pen hasn’t been used recently, the pigment sinks, making the tip appear dry.

The Fix:
Shake the pen thoroughly to mix the paint, then press the nib gently on scrap paper until the colour flows smoothly. Repeat taps may be needed for pens that have not been used for a long time.

Prevention:
Store POSCA pens flat and always shake them before each session to keep pigment evenly distributed. This ensures consistent paint flow and avoids dry-start problems.

Blobbing or Leaking Paint

The Problem:
POSCA pen paint unexpectedly pools or blobs on your artwork, creating messy or unwanted spots.

Why It Happens:
Excess paint can accumulate in the nib if the pen is over-pumped, stored tip-down, or pressed too hard. Sudden temperature changes can also thin the paint temporarily, causing leaks.

The Fix:
Wipe the nib gently with scrap paper or a tissue, then test on a separate surface before returning to your artwork.

Prevention:
Avoid pressing the nib too hard when priming. Store pens flat and test flow before drawing. These small habits prevent most blobbing issues.

Streaky or Uneven Coverage

The Problem:
POSCA markers appear patchy or streaky, particularly over large areas.

Why It Happens:
POSCA paint works best when layered. Applying too much at once, or over a wet layer can result in streaks.

The Fix:
Allow the first layer to dry completely, then apply another thin, even layer for full coverage. Use strokes in a single direction for a smooth finish.

Prevention:
Layer colours gradually rather than trying to cover large areas in one pass. This ensures vibrant, consistent coverage every time.

Clogged or Scratchy Nibs

The Problem:
The pen feels scratchy or refuses to release paint even after shaking.

Why It Happens:
Dried paint inside the nib can block flow, often caused by leaving the pen uncapped or unused for a long period of time.

The Fix:
Remove the nib and soak it in warm water for a few minutes. Many POSCA nibs are reversible, so flipping the nib can restore smooth flow. Reinsert and gently prime on scrap paper.

Prevention:
Always recap pens immediately after use, and clean nibs regularly when working on rough or absorbent surfaces.

Mixed or Muddy Colours on the Tip

The Problem:
Bright colours appear dull or muddy after blending or drawing over wet paint.

Why It Happens:
Drawing over wet layers can transfer pigment back into the nib, creating unexpected colour mixes.

The Fix:
Wipe the nib on scrap paper until the original colour returns. For stubborn cases, rinse the nib gently with warm water.

Prevention:
Allow each layer to dry completely before adding new colours. Clean the nib between shades, especially when switching from dark to light colours.
