This guide shows you how to balance colour, movement, and texture to create captivating, fluid artworks, using Specialist Crafts X2 Free Flow Acrylics, pouring mediums and silicone oils, along with essential tools like the hake brushes, canvases and plastic cups.

Step by step - Let's Create

Prepare your workspace, this could get messy! You will need a range of X2 shades, plastic cups, a hake brush or similar, a pouring medium and silicone oil. *Drying times may vary, factor in 3-4 days for this project.*

Start by choosing your background colour and mix some of this into a cup with a small amount of water. This will create your wash to then fill the background of your canvas, using a large hake brush.

Mix approximately 1 part X2 acryl paint, 0.5 part pouring medium and 0.5 part water to create fluid paint with the consistency of warm honey. Stir in a few drops of silicone into each colour, and then pour a part of each colour into one cup

Once this is prepared, slowly pour the paint out onto the centre of your canvas. You can spread this bigger by slowly tilting the canvas in a circular motion.

Once you are happy with the size of your melon shape, you can create swirls and patterns in the paint using the end of a paintbrush, or add further drips of paint to give depth to your design. Allow to dry for 24 hours plus.

When your first layer is dry, you can add another layer over the top. Prepare paint to be poured out into plastic cups, then slowly pour this out on top of the melon. Here we have used red and white to create the centre of the melon, then used a palette knife to blend these to create a marbled effect.

Leave the previous layer to dry a little bit, then add further details and highlights to your design. You can do this by dripping carefully directly from the paint bottle spout or using a brush. Leave to dry completely, then your design is complete.
